The part of care nobody wants to talk about

Personal care is the first thing a family avoids and the last thing they can manage themselves. A grown son does not want to shower his father. A wife of fifty years should not be lifting her husband off a toilet. Both keep trying anyway, and both end up hurt.

Bringing in an aide for this one piece changes the whole house. The hard half hour stops being a family argument and becomes a job somebody is trained for. What is left over — the conversation, the lunch, the visit — goes back to being a visit.

Personal care is usually the first service a family adds and the one that makes the largest immediate difference.

What personal care covers

Written into the care plan before the first shift, and reviewed as needs change.

Bathing and showering

Shower, bed bath or strip wash, whichever is safe that day, with the bathroom set up before anyone steps in.

Dressing and grooming

Clothes chosen and put on in an order that works for a stiff shoulder; hair, shaving and oral care.

Toileting and continence

Timed prompting, help on and off, and continence care handled matter-of-factly and in private.

Transfers and positioning

Bed to chair, chair to walker, correct technique and equipment, with pressure relief for anyone sitting long.

Skin and nails

Daily skin checks on heels, hips and elbows, and basic nail care within what an aide may do.

Signs personal care is already overdue

  • Same clothes two or three days running
  • A bathroom that is being avoided
  • Bruising on arms from being pulled up
  • A family member's own back giving out
  • Skin breaking down at the heel or base of the spine

Start with one visit a day

Most families begin with a single morning visit and build from there. Call and we will work out what the first week should look like.
