Mobility Assistance and Fall Prevention in Pembroke Park

Most falls at home happen on the same six feet of floor, doing the same three things. An aide who knows that changes the odds.

A fall is rarely the first thing that went wrong

By the time somebody falls, the warning signs have usually been there for months — furniture-walking, a hand on the wall, a chair that now takes three attempts to get out of. Families notice all of it and still get blindsided, because none of it looks urgent until the ambulance arrives.

Mobility support works on both halves of the problem at once. An aide assists the movements that have become risky, and the same aide takes out the trip hazards, moves what is being reached for, and gets the walker used properly instead of pushed along in front like a shopping trolley.

Mobility support is written into most care plans alongside personal care rather than booked on its own.

What mobility support involves

Hands-on assistance, plus the environment the movement happens in.

Transfers done properly

Bed to chair, chair to toilet, chair to car — correct technique, correct equipment, and never by pulling on an arm.

Walking support

Standing by through the distances that have become risky, indoors and out, at the pace the day allows.

Equipment used right

Cane, walker, wheelchair or transfer belt set at the correct height and actually used as designed.

Hazard removal

Loose rugs, trailing flex, dark hallways, a bathmat with no grip, the thing stored on a high shelf.

Sitting and lying position

Regular repositioning for anyone who cannot shift their own weight, protecting heels, hips and the base of the spine.

Time to act when

  • There has been one fall, or one near miss
  • Furniture is being used as a handrail
  • Getting off a low sofa now takes several tries
  • The walker is being left in another room
  • Unexplained bruises are appearing on shins and forearms

The cheapest fall is the one that does not happen
